Base Metal

1. The largest proportion of metal present in an alloy. 2. A metal that readily oxidizes, or that dissolves to form ions. 3. The metal or alloy that is welded, brazed, soldered, or cut. 4. After welding, that part of the metal that was not melted.

Base Station

The bottom section of a station buck that serves as a reference point in metal working.

Base Timing

The Spark advance setting before or without PCM control.

Beginning or starting voltage level

Baseline

An initial reference point.

Basic Fuel Metering

The amount of fuel delivered to the injectors in a continuous-flow, fuel-injection system. Based on airflow sensor readings of engine load and rpm.

Basic Fuel Quality

The amount of fuel delivered to the injectors, in a pulsed, fuel-injection system, based on airflow sensor readings of engine load and rpm.

Basket

An accessory that attaches to a roof rack and features a flat bottom and raised sides. Also known as a safari rack. A basket makes it easy to accommodate large or awkward loads (such as boxes or luggage), rather than trying to balance things on a pair of roof rack crossbars or allowing them to rest on the vehicle's roof, which could scratch it. The basket's side rails also make great attachment points fortie-downs and auxiliary lights.

Bass Compensation

A circuit in an audio amplifier that increases the output of low-end audio frequencies at low listening levels to compensate for the human ear's loss of sensitivity under these conditions.

Most vehicles come with a single battery under the hood, which is sufficient if it is stock and resides in an average climate. Vehicles with extensive audio systems or a large compliment of electronic accessories sometimes require a second battery.

A device for storing energy in chemical form so it can be released as electricity.

Battery Acid

An electrolyte used in a battery; s mixture of water (H2O) and sulfuric acid (H2SO1).

Battery Backup

Auxiliary power that is provided to a computer so volatile memory information is not lost during a power failure, or when otherwise disconnected from its normal power source.
